British Values

In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain.

Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

Personal Responsibility and Liberty

  • Understanding school and classroom rules.
  • School jobs and responsibilities.
  • Home school agreements.
  • We are actively encouraged to make choices in a safe and supportive environment.
  • We have a wide variety of extra-curricular clubs to choose from, depending on our interests.
  • We have regular assemblies/lessons informing us of our rights and personal freedoms.

Tolerance of Culture, Faith and Others

  • We include all children and staff regardless of their needs.
  • Local, National and Global charity work.
  • Cultural themes and festivals (Harvest, Christmas, Chinese New Year, Diwali).
  • Reflection opportunities in assemblies.
  • Visits to places of worship.
  • Visitors to school.
  • French lessons which look at culture and traditions.

Mutual Respect

  • We show respect to all staff, visitors and pupils and they show us the same respect.
  • We follow a shared behaviour policy throughout the school. We all follow “The Mount Pleasant Way”.
  • Darwin Value afternoons, PSHE, RE lessons, circle time and talk time.
  • Competitive sports and PE lessons.
  • Peer reading buddies.
  • Buddies: ECO Councillors and School Councillors.

Democracy

  • Election of Class councillors for our School Council.
  • Election of ECO councillors.
  • ECO and School Councillors involved in decision making which makes sure all children have a voice.
  • Mount Pleasant Buddies.
  • Pupils have input into the child friendly anti-bullying policy and behaviour policy.

Rule of the Law

  • We are taught the importance of laws, whether they govern the class, the school or the country.
  • We follow the “Darwin principles”; these help us to become independent learners and good citizens.
  • We are taught the values and reasons behind laws.
